Artist's Comments

This photograph has haunted me ever since I took it, and up until now I have had trouble connecting with the reason as to why it had such an impact on me.

In some ways, I am shocked and saddened at my reaction to this photograph. It proves to me how embedded our stereotypes can be, even when we consider ourselves to be 'open minded' individuals. The last thing I imagine a beautiful girl like this to be doing is covering her face. Arguably, in my area, generation and culture, beauty/fame/image appears more important to the majority than things such as knowledge/integrity/charity, and standing up for what you believe in.

The bottom line is that I was shocked to see such a beautiful woman stand up so strongly for what she believed in that she was willing to go to such extremes to fight to defend those beliefs. The fact that she wanted to conceal her identity, as opposed to flaunt it, goes against everything I’ve noticed about modern youth culture.

It's haunting, but unbelievably refreshing, and conversely, it's made me feel much better about the world.

Her gaze gives me the chills! Beautifully captured. I'm not familiar with the G20 protests, but the sheer look in her eyes, such intensity...its breathtaking.
